Welcome to Year 2 - Puffins Class
Puffins Class is taught by Miss Smallman.
Term 3: Brilliant Britons
In Term 3, we will be learning about Famous People including the Royal Family, Charles Dickens and many others. We will be reading the book Halibut Jackson as part of the Power of Reading and will also be doing lots of writing about the Victorians which is a big part of our topic this term. We will find out lots about how the Victorians lived and compare that to how we live now. This term we will also be visiting the Guildhall Museum to find out about Charles Dickens and the Victorian hulk ships. It is a busy term but full of fun learning opportunities!
Term 2: Fire!
In Term 2, we will be finding out all about the Great Fire of London. We will be learning about how the fire started, where it spread and what we can learn from these terrible events. We will find out about Samuel Pepys and the importance of his diary. In English, we will be reading Toby and the Great Fire of London, a new text which is based on a boy who finds himself in the middle of the chaos of the Great Fire. Towards the end of the term we will be focussing on Anne Fine's 'The Diary of a Killer Cat' to develop the children's English skills.
Of course Term 2 is also a very busy term as we prepare for Christmas. We will be learning about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. During the last 3 weeks of term we will be using the book Mog's Christmas Calamity in English.
Science is also very important during this term and we will be finding out about materials and learning lots of great scientific vocabulary so listen out for your children impressing you with their knowledge!
Term 1 - Healthy eating
Welcome to Puffins Class 2020-2021. We are so pleased to be back at school and cannot wait to start learning together again. In Term 1, Puffins class will be learning about how to keep ourselves healthy. We will look at exercise, healthy eating and hygiene. We will be using the cookery corner a lot over the term and in Art will be learning about the famous artist: Archimboldo.
We will be focusing a lot on key skills to enable all children to catch up any learning they may have missed over the school closure. In English, the whole school will be learning about the book ‘Here We Are‘ by Oliver Jeffers and then in Year 2 we will be using the Supertato series to start off our topic. This book will hopefully capture the children's imagination and help to produce some fantastic art work and English writing.
In Maths, we will be focusing heavily on number. We will learn key skills like place value, addition and subtraction throughout the term. During our afternoon maths meetings we will continue to revisit and revise shape, space and measures and other aspects of Maths and we are also introducing problem solving Fridays which will be great fun!
Reading is a huge priority throughout Year 2 so please do make sure to read nightly at home. We will be continuing to teach phonics before progressing to spellings and spelling patterns and will also be having taught comprehension skills lessons so that all children can make good progress with their reading.
But most of all we will be having lots of FUN!
PE will be twice a week (days to be confirmed) – please remember that earrings have to be removed for PE. Please ensure that their entire PE kit is named, including shoes.
We are unable to provide cups so it is vital that children have their own water bottles - even in the winter! Being well hydrated helps us to concentrate and learn.
Reading is a massive focus in Year 2 so please ensure your child's book is in daily. It is expected that the children read every night or at the least every alternate night. This is vital to help them progress further with their reading and become fluent readers.
Homework is set on Fridays and due in on the following Wednesday. Please help your child to complete their homework and ensure it is in on time. If you have any questions about homework please contact me via Class Dojo. If you have helped a lot with your child's homework or think they are unsure about the task please feel free to write a comment on the homework itself.
Children will also receive spellings on Friday which are tested on the following Friday. These follow spelling patterns or phonic sounds and are learnt throughout the week at school. These spelling patterns will help the children to spell new and unknown words. Practising these words at home will really help your child to do well with their English writing at school. Please make sure the yellow spelling book is back in school for Friday ready for the next weeks spellings.
Children are not allowed to bring in pencil cases or other objects from home. If they have something they would like to share with the class I would advise you to send a photo of it via Class Dojo and we can share the photograph with the children. Toys are not allowed to be brought in. Children should only bring one bag to school.
